T1/E1 Tap

Passive T1/E1 Tap

T1/E1 Taps

ImageStream's passive T1/E1 taps make it possible to monitor one or two full duplex T1 or E1 circuits. Both taps provide an automatic relay pass-through function that allows data to continue flowing through the line when power is removed. Both taps use standard RJ48 connectors to make connections to the T1/E1 line (or lines). However, the two taps have different interfaces to the analyzer, which means that the taps are very different with regard to cabling to the analyzer and support for redundant power.

TAP-TE-RJ48
The TAP-TE-RJ48 single line T1/E1 tap provides the ideal cabling solution for end user applications that require RJ48 connections to the analyzer. The analyzer port is compatible with 8-pin RJ48 modular plugs, however a custom pin-out is used for monitoring. Because the tap's analyzer port carries both halves of the full duplex T1/E1 data signal over standard UTP cabling, a special cable is required that provides one RJ48 plug with non-standard pin-outs for connection to the tap, and two RJ48 plugs for connection to the analyzer.

The analyzer cable for the TAP-TE-RJ48 single line tap can be made inexpensively using standard CAT5 UTP cable and standard 8-pin modular plugs (contact ImageStream support for pin-outs). However, this cable will have two plugs on one end of the cable, which may not provide a professsional-looking installation with the required strain relief. If needed, ImageStream offers custom-made analyzer cables that provide the appropriate strain relief for a clean installation.

The TAP-TE-RJ48 uses standard RJ48 connections to the analyzer, so it must derive its power from an external AC-DC power supply. The tap provides two redundant connections for DC power input, and two corresponding "power chain" output connections for powering additional taps using a single supply. One 500 mA 12 VDC power supply and one power chain cable is included with each tap, and each power supply is capable of powering up to 3 taps. The included power supply is designed for use with 120 VAC mains, and is compatible with standard U.S. power receptacles. International AC/DC power supplies are sold separately.

TAP-2TE-DB25
The TAP-2TE-DB25 is a dual line T1/E1 tap designed for OEM customers who want to simplify cabling for their end users. Like the TAP-TE-RJ48, the TAP-2TE-DB25 provides RJ48 interfaces for connection to the T1/E1 lines. However, the analyzer connection utilizes a custom DB25 interface that carries the four signals from two duplex T1 or E1 circuits to the analyzer, as well as power from the analyzer to the tap.

A compatible analyzer interface is required for connection to the custom tap interface provided by the TAP-2TE-DB25. OEM customers may use any or all of ImageStream's compatible WAN monitoring cards, including the PCI 604-T1 and PCI 604-E1 to support one dual line tap, and the PCI 608-T1 and PCI 608-E1 to support two dual line taps. The 604 and 608 cards provide a compatible DB26HD interface which connects to the tap's DB25 connector using a custom cable.

The TAP-2TE-DB25 does not support redundant power, because it derives its power from the monitoring card. Like the TAP-TE-RJ48, the TAP-2TE-DB25 automatically engages its pass-through relays to maintain data circuit continuity when power is removed from the tap. While the redundant power capabilities of the TAP-TE-RJ48 may be needed for some monitoring applications, most OEM customers find the TAP-2TE-DB25 to provide a superior solution for most end users because of its dual line density, simplified cabling, and mated monitoring card that can be integrated into most PC-based analyzers.
