CompactPCI Card Overview
For several years, ImageStream has been a leading supplier of CompactPCI networking solutions. CompactPCI hardware has traditionally been designed to conform to the CompactPCI standards for 3U and 6U cards. But today, manufacturers are moving away from cards that are built specifically for the 3U and 6U standards, and instead are moving toward the use of the PMC form factor which can be mounted on carrier cards for PCI, 3U CompactPCI, and 6U CompactPCI applications.
ImageStream supports this new direction among manufacturers for several reasons. First, the PMC form factor does not require multiple engineering efforts to support one product in three different form factors. Second, manufacturing costs can be reduced by increasing production runs of PMC cards that cover all applications. And finally, inventory costs are reduced when a single card can be deployed in applications that require any of the three form factors.
ImageStream has already made its transition away from the use of specific 3U and 6U networking cards. In the place of these cards, ImageStream is now supplying 3U and 6U carrier cards for use with its line of PMC networking cards. The one exception to this approach is the 720 series 6U CompactPCI cards. This series of cards includes co-processed HSSI, DS3 and E3 cards that have circuitry which will not fit on the smaller PMC card.
The following sections provide an overview of ImageStream's standard CompactPCI cards.
The CPCI 720 series includes accelerated one and two port 6U CompactPCI cards for HSSI, DS3 and E3 applications. The embedded Intel i960 packet co-processor on each 720 series card makes it possible to transmit and receive small 64-byte packets at line speed. The 720 series solves problems with small packets that unaccelerated cards can encounter as a result of generating more interrupts than a standard interrupt controller can process.
ImageStream supports 3U CompactPCI applications with its 3U carrier card. This card complies with the specifications for the 3U CompactPCI form factor, and may be used in any 3U CompactPCI chassis. The appropriate 32 or 64 bit PMC card is mounted on the carrier to provide flexible 3U solutions.
ImageStream offers a 6U CompactPCI carrier card to deploy its line of PMC cards in 6U CompactPCI applications. The PMC card is mounted on the carrier card and installed in the CompactPCI chassis to provide a wide range of flexible 6U networking solutions.
