ImageStream Takes Over VRRP Project

ImageStream Internet Solutions has taken over development of the Open Source project for the Virtual Router Redundancy Protocol (VRRP). VRRP is based on RFC 2338 which supports redundant router operations for LAN applications. The existing VRRP project for Linux was no longer being maintained, and ImageStream took over the project when the company decided to add VRRP to its ImageStream Linux router distribution.

As specified in RFC 2338, VRRP uses an election protocol that dynamically assigns responsibility for a virtual router to one of the VRRP routers on a LAN. When a VRRP router controls an IP address associated with a virtual router’s LAN interface, it forwards the packets sent to that IP address until a problem occurs. If network connectivity is interrupted, the VRRP routers hold an election and dynamically failover the IP addresses for the gateway that has malfunctioned.

ImageStream says VRRP can be used in conjunction with the BGP4 dynamic routing protocol to provide fully redundant WAN and Internet gateways. The BGP4 protocol supports WAN failover across multiple Internet gateways, and VRRP provides failover across multiple LAN paths to those gateways. This approach makes it possible to deploy redundant Internet connections with automatic LAN failover across redundant routers.

According to ImageStream officials, large and small Internet providers, enterprise networks, and telecom carriers are using BGP4 and VRRP to provide uninterrupted WAN and Internet services. As network users have become increasingly reliant on Internet access for their work, they have also become less tolerant of service outages. With modern enterprise network designs becoming more reliant on the Internet for interoffice voice and e-mail communications, the reliability of Internet services has become tantamount to enterprises and service providers alike.

The VRRP protocol provides a key element in standards-based solutions that support the failover of LAN connections across redundant routers. VRRP can be deployed using ImageStream routers, or it can be installed on a Linux-based host. ImageStream says that the cost of deploying redundant network services has fallen so much in the past year that network designs with redundant Internet connections have become common.
